President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended a warm welcome to visitors, competitors, and spectators arriving in Lagos for the historic E1 Lagos Grand Prix, the first-ever electric powerboat racing championship to be held on African soil.
In his goodwill message, Tinubu described Lagos as the pride of Nigeria and the home to the largest concentration of Black people in the world. He celebrated the city’s legacy of hosting landmark global events, from FESTAC ’77, the first Festival of Black Arts and Culture, to the recent Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX)—the world’s largest startup showcase. He also highlighted the success of the Lagos International Marathon, which has drawn elite athletes from around the globe since its inception in 2016.

Now, Lagos adds another feather to its cap by joining the ranks of Monaco, London, Jeddah, and Venice as host cities of the E1 Powerboat Championship.
“I am proud and happy that this city keeps making history,” the President said. “Though I serve as Nigeria’s President—a role I am deeply honored to hold—I remain a proud Lagosian. This state continues to affirm its place as a bold, forward-looking city and a gateway to innovation, technology, and global sporting excellence.”
The President emphasized that the E1 Lagos GP is more than a thrilling spectacle on water—it is a statement of intent. The championship merges world-class entertainment with clean energy innovation, showcasing electric-powered vessels that reflect a commitment to a greener and more sustainable future.
“As a nation committed to renewable energy and environmental stewardship, Nigeria welcomes this pioneering event as a fitting complement to our drive toward a low-carbon economy.”

He described Lagos as the cultural capital of Nigeria, the heartbeat of the nation’s economy, and a symbol of resilience. Its vibrant waterways and dynamic people, he said, make it the perfect host for this groundbreaking event.
The President commended Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, his team, and all partners—especially the E1 organizers and sponsors—for their vision and dedication in bringing the race to Lagos.
He also acknowledged the global celebrity-owned teams participating in the championship, noting that they carry the hopes of millions who believe in the power of sport to unite, inspire, and transform.
“May your courage on the waters remind us that innovation and excellence know no boundaries.”
The President further highlighted the event’s alignment with his administration’s commitment to developing Nigeria’s blue economy as a catalyst for growth. By investing in coastal infrastructure, marine tourism, and renewable energy, he said, the country is creating jobs, unlocking opportunities for youth, and strengthening its position in the global community.

“Let the E1 Lagos GP be more than a race. Let it signal to Nigeria, Africa, and the world that we are ready to lead in the great transition to clean energy and sustainable prosperity.”
In closing, the President welcomed all guests on behalf of the government and the people of Nigeria.
“May you enjoy the warmth of Lagos, the rhythm of our culture, and the promise of our future.”
