With a strong contingent of 359 athletes and 111 officials set to compete in 23 sports, Akwa Ibom State has issued a firm call for clean and disciplined participation at the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games 2024.
The team departed Uyo for Ogun State on Friday, May 16, 2025, carrying a clear message: uphold discipline, compete fairly, and represent the State with pride.
Delivering the Governor’s charge at the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre, Commissioner for Sports, Paul Bassey, emphasized the importance of integrity and sportsmanship. “We would rather win ten gold medals with pride than achieve more through indiscipline or actions that bring dishonor to our State,” he stated.
The Governor urged the athletes to be worthy ambassadors, stressing that their conduct on and off the field reflects on Akwa Ibom. “Avoid scandals, remain focused, and compete clean. Above all, carry the banner of our State with dignity,” he added.
The Gateway Games 2024 will run from May 16 to 28 in Ogun State, bringing together athletes from across Nigeria in a celebration of talent, unity, and fair play.
