Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Thursday, May 15, 2025, proudly received the Torch of Unity in anticipation of the 22nd National Sports Festival, themed Gateway Games 2024.
The symbolic torch was handed over to the governor by Dorcas Adesokan, double gold medalist at the 2014 African Youth Games and champion in both Women’s Singles and Doubles, at the City Gate along the Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu Expressway.

In his remarks, Governor Abiodun emphasized the significance of the Torch, which has journeyed across all states of the federation since it was presented to President Bola Tinubu by the National Sports Commission. He described it as a powerful emblem of national unity and shared aspirations.
“The Unity Torch, which began its journey in March, represents more than just the upcoming Gateway Games. It symbolizes our collective dream of a united Nigeria—where our diversity is our strength and our youth are empowered to shine on the global stage,” the governor stated.
He further highlighted that the Torch reflects Ogun State’s commitment to celebrating Nigeria’s rich sporting heritage and fostering an environment of peace, unity, and mutual respect.

“These values are at the heart of the National Sports Festival, established in 1973 to promote national cohesion, resilience, and sportsmanship,” he added.
Governor Abiodun reaffirmed Ogun State’s readiness to host the prestigious event for the second time, pledging to showcase the state’s vibrant culture, warm hospitality, and exceptional athletic talent.

“Receiving the Torch of Unity is a profound honor. It reignites our dedication to youth development, national unity, and the celebration of our diversity through sports,” he concluded.
The 22nd National Sports Festival officially kicks off on Friday, May 16, with the arrival of participating teams from across the country in the Gateway State.
