In preparation for the 22nd National Sports Festival, dubbed Gateway 2024, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has appointed former Green Eagles captain Segun Odegbami as the Grand Sports Ambassador. Announcing the appointment on Tuesday, May 6, in Abeokuta, the Governor emphasized that Odegbami’s role extends beyond the NSF, as he is expected to spearhead the state’s efforts in establishing a robust sports ecosystem.

Previously, the state had named Commonwealth champion Tobi Amusan and former World Boxing heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua as sports ambassadors.

Governor Abiodun described Odegbami as a highly qualified individual who can help transform Ogun State into a hub for the sports economy in Nigeria.

“Permit me to use this opportunity to unveil Chief Segun Odegbami as our Grand Sports Ambassador. This is the first time in the history of the Festival that we are appointing a Grand Sports Ambassador,” the Governor stated.

“The National Sports Festival will come and go, but we are already planning to leverage the benefits that will arise from hosting the NSF. Odegbami will play a crucial role in maximizing the sports economy. He has already provided us with a template based on the Amsterdam Arena, which we intend to replicate at the MKO Abiola Stadium.”

In his remarks, Odegbami expressed his gratitude to the Governor for the honor and pledged to fulfill his responsibilities effectively.

“I came here at the Governor’s invitation, unaware of his plans for me. This is a great honor from my homeland and our sports-loving Governor. I want to thank him for this recognition and assure everyone that the state will host an outstanding festival. I promise to justify the confidence placed in me with this appointment,” Odegbami said.
