“Maybe one day you’ll break some records.”

OGUN 2024

Racheal Kundananji might not have believed those words when she first embarked on her football journey, but they would soon prove prophetic. The 24-year-old initially played in secret, keeping her family unaware as she honed her skills on the streets after school.

“They would think I was going to a friend’s place,” she revealed in an interview with BBC Africa. However, stepping out of the shadows transformed her life. Football ceased to be just a passion—it became a viable career. Moreover, Kundananji emerged as a beacon of hope for young African girls aspiring to follow in her footsteps.

Much of her success stems from the unwavering support of her family. “My mum is my biggest influence,” she shared. “I’ve learned from her to work hard and never give up. If you’re good at something, follow your dreams.”

This support, coupled with self-belief, propelled Kundananji to her current status: the most expensive transfer in women’s football and a soon-to-be two-time Olympian at Paris 2024.

Women’s football has long fought for recognition on par with men’s football. Gradually, the tide is turning, thanks to players who paved the way and Kundananji’s generation, which continues to work hard and reap the rewards.

In her interviews with BBC and The Guardian, Kundananji emphasizes the importance of following dreams and highlights her generation’s potential to break records. She doesn’t limit her impact to the pitch; she’s also launched her foundation, dedicated to empowering young athletes and transforming communities across Southern Africa.

“Football is more than a sport,” she asserts. “It’s a unifying force for change. Together, let’s build a legacy of diversity, equality, and opportunity.”

Kundananji’s goal-scoring prowess is undeniable. In her debut senior season with Indeni Roses in Zambia, she netted 21 goals in 18 appearances. Subsequently, she secured her first professional contract with Kazakhstan’s BIIK Kazygurt, winning consecutive league titles.

Her journey took her to Spain, where she played in Liga F (formerly Premiera Iberdrola) for Eibar. But it was her move to Madrid CFF in 2022 that truly ignited her goal-scoring sensation. In two seasons, she found the net 33 times in 43 games.

Bay FC in San Francisco recognized her talent, setting a new world transfer record by paying $820,000 US dollars to secure her services. Her agent, Chris Atkins, describes her as “a dedicated, humble, and unbelievable goal scorer.”

Kundananji’s rise from anonymity to global acclaim exemplifies resilience, hard work, and the power of dreams. She embodies the hope that Africa’s talent will continue to shine brightly on the world stage.
