A six-member wrestling contingent from Nigeria is set to participate in a pre-Olympic Games tournament in Madrid, Spain.
The team, consisting of five women and one male wrestler, along with three coaches, will depart Nigeria on July 3. After the tournament in Madrid, they will proceed to Germany for their final training camp ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in France.
Wrestlers unveiled include Blessing Oborodudu (68kg) – Tokyo 2020 Olympics silver medalist; Odunayo Adekuoroye (57kg) – Reigning African champion; Hannah Reuben (76kg) – Military world champion; Esther Kolawole (62kg) – Reigning African champion (debutant); Ogunsanya Christinah (53kg) – Reigning African champion (debutant) and Ashton Mutuwa (125kg) – Men’s freestyle wrestling
The coaches are Victor Kodei, Purity Akuh, and Happiness Burutu.
Daniel Igali, President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, expressed confidence in the team’s performance.
“The athletes have been in camp training for weeks, and in my view, they’re well-prepared,” he stated.
Igali emphasized that the goal is not just participation but competing for medals.
Earlier, the Bayelsa State Government encouraged the team to make Nigeria proud by competing cleanly and bringing glory back home.
