Sharath Kamal Achanta, an Indian sports legend, continues to inspire athletes worldwide. His conduct both on and off the table has endeared him to fans. Recently, Achanta led the Indian contingent to the 2024 WTT Contender Lagos, where he spent two nights in Nigeria’s commercial hub. In an exclusive interview, he expressed his feelings about Lagos and his preparations for the upcoming Paris Olympic Games.
“This is my first time in Lagos,” Achanta shared. “We had a training camp before this, and we know we need some matches running into the Olympic Games, so we had to get here. It’s been a good experience—competitive matches, warm hospitality, and pleasant weather. Lagos feels like a home away from home.”

As the tournament’s third seed, Achanta aims for success in Lagos. “I’m confident in my form,” he stated. “My goal is a podium finish. Seeded third, I want to defend my position by reaching the semifinals. Ideally, I’d love to make it to the finals and secure a victory. I’ve prepared well, and I hope to perform at my best.”
Achanta’s achievements are remarkable. Ranked 44th globally, he holds the distinction of being the first Indian table tennis player to win the Senior National Championship ten times, surpassing the record set by Kamlesh Mehta, an eight-time champion. In 2019, he received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, and in 2022, he was honored with the Khel Ratna Award, the country’s highest sporting accolade.

As India’s flag bearer at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, Achanta looks forward to representing his nation one last time on the grand stage. His stellar performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where he secured three gold medals, solidified his legacy as a true sports icon.
