To celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) in line with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) on Saturday, March 24, organised a walk to celebrate the achievement of female athletes in the country.

At the well-attended event held in Lagos, NOC also reiterated its commitment to support female athletes to excel especially at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

According to NOC, the Olympic body has committed to  gender equality through leadership forums and training programs for women to prepare them for leadership positions.

Head of Youth and Women at NOC, Kemi Obidahunsi who represented the President of NOC, Engr Habu Gummel, said: “Most of our programs are tailored to encouraging  women as athletes, coaches, administrators and technical officials. The leadership of NOC led by Engr. Habu Gummel will continue to encourage and support the participation of our women to come on board and take leadership positions.”

She however, admonished women to support one another and  maintain unity among themselves. 

Prof. Florence Adeyanju,  the chairperson of NOC Women Commission advised women to be focused and use the values of  sport as a tool to develop themselves. She thanked everyone for  coming to walk in Solidarity with this year’s International Women’s Day ”Inspire Inclusion, she urged participants to use the opportunity to check their health status with the medical team on ground.

The participants took the opportunity to know their health status, through a series of tests provided HIV, Blood Pressure, Sugar level  and Hepatitis B. 

Adeyanju thanked the NOC for the support given to the Women Commission to organize the event and I believe that the next one will be bigger and better. 

The campaign theme for 2024 IWD is ‘Inspire Inclusion’.
