Defending champions Morocco will battle 33 other countries for medals in the boxing event of the 13th Africa Games in Accra.

Ghanaian Times reported that a delighted Secretary General of the African Boxing Confederation (AfBC) expressed satisfaction with the increased number of participants and was optimistic about more countries likely to confirm before the deadline.

According to an AfBC statement, it will be in charge of the boxing tournament in Accra in conjunction with the Organising Committee.

It said the 2019 edition of the African Games in Rabat attracted 31 countries with the host, Morocco, clinching the overall team title with four gold, two silver and one bronze, followed by Botswana, Algeria, Egypt and Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Malawi can only afford to send two boxers to Accra for the African Games.

The Malawi Amateur Boxing Association (MABA) named eight boxers for the Games but the cash-strapped Malawian government can only afford to cater for two boxers.

The duo includes light-welterweight, Elias Bonzo, and welterweight, Lewis Zakeyu.

The two boxers, together with female featherweight, Natasha Maya, represented Malawi in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
